An applicant can qualify for a New Hampshire license with a bachelor’s or associate degree in criminal justice, as well as two years of experience being a licensed investigator. The criminal justice degree covers corrections, investigations, the court system, criminal behavior and law enforcement.

A private investigator can get licensure in the state without a degree, but with the right experience. He can satisfy the condition with a four-year experience being a firefighter who is certified by International Association of Arson Investigators. A police officer having four years of full-time experience will also obtain a license as a private investigator. The New Hampshire State Police Division of Licensing and Permits also enables a licensed private detective with four years of experience to attain a license in this state. An applicant for an NH private investigator license should go through a criminal background investigation. The state won’t grant this kind of license to anybody who has a criminal background such as convictions of fraud, theft, violent misdemeanor or a different felony conviction.
